Solar Eclipse

Weekend solar eclipse to project ‘ring of fire’

The last annular eclipse appeared in the United States in 1994.

More than 1,000 people may flood the small town of Kanarraville, Utah — population 300 — to get one of the best views of Sunday’s event, said Bonnie Char, spokeswoman for the Cedar City-Brian Head Tourism Bureau.

County and town authorities plan to provide everything from food to portable toilets to accommodate the crowds, and sheriff’s deputies and police officers will be directing traffic, Char said. The town is calling the eclipse “the ring of fire.”

The Brian Head Resort is opening its ski lift so people can watch the eclipse from atop the mountain peak of more than 11,000 feet. For $8, visitors will get a ride up the mountain and solar glasses with which to view the eclipse before the sun sets behind the nearby mountains, Char said.

The Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California, are among those holding viewing parties.

The CapRock Winery in Lubbock, Texas, is inviting people to sit outside on blankets — glass of wine in hand — to see the eclipse. Read the rest of this entry »

Mariano Rivera

Beckett News » Despite injury, Mariano Rivera's RC remains hot

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

It may not look like much, but the baseball card seen here is the most-valuable release in one of the most-important sets of the 1990s.

And it might be a bit of a lesson in card manufacturing — or at least supply and demand.

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has been in the news lately as he has a blood clot in his right calf, a complication of tearing his ACL and injuring his knee during a fluke accident while shagging fly balls before a game in Kansas City earlier this month. It’s a career-threatening injury for the 42-year-old career saves leader, but he has vowed to return to pitch one more time not ready for his record 608 saves to be his final mark.

Despite all of this negative attention for what has been a first-ballot Hall of Fame-caliber career, Rivera’s 1992 Bowman card in the set.

Sure, he is one of the Core Four Yankees responsible for many a World Series ring for the game’s most-successful franchise. Sure, he’s a player with a spotless public image. Sure, he’s had a groundswell of support since his injury, including a pretty entertaining video encouraging him to come back (above). Read the rest of this entry »

Super Moon 2012

Recent “Super Moon” Creates Beautiful Images of Yosemite National Park

Photographers captures amazing images of Yosemite National Park over the weekend as the closer than average full moon created some amazing photographic opportunities.

(PRWEB) May 07, 2012

The recent “super moon” event hailed throughout social media created some amazing lighting conditions in Yosemite National Park.

Photographers flocked to the popular park Saturday night to take advantage of the lighting created by the full moon, which appeared as much as 30 percent brighter thanks to it being approximately 15,000 miles closer than average.

“There were tripods and cameras everywhere taking advantage of the conditions,” said Jarrod Lyman with the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, which promotes the park and the southern gateway region of Madera County.

“A lot of people were able to capture the beauty created by the full moon.”

One of the popular scenes was an effect known as a “moonbow” at Yosemite Falls. Occurring during a full moon when the fall is running at high capacity, the light from the moon shines through the mist of Yosemite Falls, creating a rainbow. Read the rest of this entry »

Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck and Five Early NFL Rookie of the Year Candidates

Andrew Luck will be in this discussion all offseason, and for good reason, too.

The Indianapolis Colts are starting over after a rich history of success behind Peyton Manning . The Colts aren’t looking at Luck to slowly develop and hopefully revive this franchise, they’re expecting for an immediate return to their glory days with their new franchise quarterback.

Luck will be the starter for the Colts right away, and he will be given the seal of approval to run the entire offense. The Colts re-signed Reggie Wayne to a three-year deal to help Luck produce and provide veteran leadership.

Indianapolis also spent five draft picks on tight ends or wide receivers to give Luck some weapons to throw to. Most of those picks aren’t elite caliber players, but Luck is used to that after playing at Stanford.

Luck’s rookie numbers might not jump off the chart, but he’ll have a chance to make that happen. Big things could be in the future for the new Colts quarterback.

It might be a bit typical, but it’s only right to put RG3 on this list. Read the rest of this entry »

Think Like A Man

Think Like a Man Beats The Hunger Games at Box Office …

Cera Shaz

Jesse and Amanda: It’s not a black and white issue but a reality issue. Actors have been denied roles and serious consideration for parts for years just because they don’t have a certain “look“. It’s a fact. As a non-white girl it at times gets tiring (although it is improving) to constantly have to see movies told from the p.o.v’s of the same group of people (white people) all the time. My intention wasn`t to put down a whole group of people but rather the hollywood producers who have been limiting the opportunities and aspects for various groups to also tell their stories on the big screen. It`s very important to open your eyes and put yourself in other peoples shoes and try to understand how it can be frustrating for those of us who are `minorities`to feel like our stories aren`t given the same merit as other groups. Also I hate to burst your bubble Amanda but I hardly believe the U.S`s problems are to blame on non-whites who want fair treatment lol..

Madeleine Mc Cann

UK police: Missing girl Madeleine may be alive

London’s Metropolitan Police said they are still investigating the disappearance of the girl, who vanished shortly before her fourth birthday in May 2007.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said he is leading a team of more than 30 police officers focusing on the case. He said police also have to consider that she may be dead.

“Our drive on both scenarios is of equal measure,” he said.

Police have released a new image of the girl, who would now be nine if she were alive.

Redwood said forensic evidence of the sequence of events around her disappearance shows there are moments when she could have been snatched by criminals but said he had an “open mind” on who could have abducted her.

Her disappearance has drawn global media attention, partly because her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were at one point questioned as suspects by the Portuguese police. They were cleared of any part in the disappearance.

Portuguese police closed their investigation in 2008 but Redwood said Scotland Yard says it wants the case reopened. Redwood said his officers are reviewing all the evidence that has been gathered so far by British and Portuguese police and by private investigators hired by McCann’s parents.

He said they have identified 195 things that could be investigated further from the material they have reviewed, and said much of it would have to be translated from Portuguese. Read the rest of this entry »

Chandler Parsons

Chances and Chandler Parsons | Hardwood Paroxysm

A few games into the season, it appeared Chandler Parsons would indeed struggle to earn minutes on an ever-crowded Rockets’ roster. The logjam at small forward was undeniably present, and Terrence Williams was getting almost the entirety of backup small forward minutes for the struggling Rockets. While Marcus Morris’s assignment to the D-League gave Parsons the chance to earn slight minutes at the 3, little real opportunity at the position remained. But, as has been wont to happen throughout his career, Williams fell out of the Rockets’ rotation almost completely. Combined with a brief injury to Budinger, Parsons was able to earn himself a spot in the rotation and eventually a starting position.

Eleven games into his career, Chandler Parsons has already started four times (all coming in the last four games). He’s quickly become the best option at small forward for the Rockets, and outperformed expectations in almost every facet of his game (except from the three-point line, where he’s started slowly). What had Danny and others so excited about Parsons’ game – the hustle, the versatility, and the athleticism – has revealed itself in conjunction with a confident demeanor. Quite simply, Parsons’s game fits the Rockets’ offense: he’s a shooting threat, he moves well away from the ball, and he rebounds well for his position. Read the rest of this entry »

Fenway Park

Ted Williams auction set for Fenway Park

You too can own a piece of a baseball history by showing up at Fenway Park a week from Saturday when the family of the Splendid Splinter auctions off The Ted Williams Collection.

Thousands of items are up for bid from a colorful catalog that’s nearly 300 pages long and covers much of Boston Red Sox legend’s life – from baseball, to fishing, to military service to family.

Williams died in 2002 at 83.

Hunt Auctions, which has worked on behalf of the families of Joe DiMaggio, John Unitas and Robin Roberts, will conduct the proceedings for Williams’ daughter Claudia.

“It became sort of a process,” Hunt president David Hunt told USA TODAY about his connection with the Williams family.

“There was always an intent. She had even talked to her father and her late brother about conducting such as auction.”

Hunt’s company had the items shipped from several storage units and residences to his Philadelphia-area offices as part of what he calls an “exhaustive” nine-month process to prepare the collection. Read the rest of this entry »
